An e-bike ride on the Island of Giglio means cycling on an island the Tuscan Archipelago has kept off the traditional tourist trail. Vineyards clinging to rock, white gravel roads suspended between sky and sea, the scent of scrubland and salt air: every stretch of coast has its own character. Any season is the right one to explore.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
The route runs mainly on paved and dirt roads, with climbs and descents but perfectly manageable for all levels. It is suitable for adults and teenagers aged 12–14 who are comfortable with the distance. The ride is on e-bikes.
We meet in Porto Santo Stefano and board the ferry to Giglio. As soon as we arrive, the ride begins: up to Giglio Castello, a medieval village perched high with views over the entire Tuscan Archipelago, then on to Capel Rosso at the island’s southern tip, where a solitary lighthouse watches over wild cliffs and open sea.
After a short stop, you ride on to Giglio Campese and its bay of golden sand — the island’s largest beach, the right place for a swim and lunch by the water. In the afternoon the route continues north to Fenaio, where another lighthouse, now converted into a boutique hotel, overlooks an untouched and rarely visited stretch of coast.
Back in Giglio Porto — a fishing village of colored houses reflected in the water — you walk the narrow lanes before catching the ferry to the mainland. During the day there’s also the chance to stop at a small local winery to taste the island’s own wine, Ansonaco: a white grape grown on granite terraces, with the taste of salt and sun (additional cost, on request).
