A ride along the Via dei Cavalleggeri
Riding the ancient trail of the Cavalleggeri means following a road that watched over the coast of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany for centuries. Between the sea and the dense Mediterranean scrubland, the route from Follonica toward Cala Violina passes through wild coastline steeped in history: Cala Martina, the enjoy Garibaldi monument, the clear waters of Cala Violina. A ride to take slowly, on two wheels, with the wind at your back and the horizon ahead.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
The route runs almost entirely on bike paths and dirt roads, with only short stretches of tarmac and gentle ups and downs. No technical difficulty — suitable for adults and children aged 10–12 who are comfortable with the distance.
The starting point is Follonica, where you meet your guide. From here you ride through the woods along the Maremma coast, with the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago always on the horizon and the scent of Mediterranean scrubland all around, until you reach Cala Martina — where in 1849, Giuseppe Garibaldi, the general who would go on to unify Italy, boarded a boat to escape capture. Then on to Cala Violina, the “musical beach” — named for the sound the sand makes underfoot. You stop here, swim in the clear water, and after a dip, head back the way you came.
