Riding through nature, food, and tradition
Riding in the Maremma means entering a landscape that doesn’t compromise: scrubland, free-roaming herds, pines that smell of salt air, light that changes color every hour of the afternoon. There’s no way to fully prepare.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
The route runs mainly on bike paths, with only short stretches of tarmac and some sections of white gravel roads typical of the Maremma. No particular technical difficulty — suitable for adults and teenagers from 12–14 years up who are comfortable with the distance. The ride is on e-bikes.
The ride starts at the farm stay Gli Attortellati, a short distance from Grosseto. On e-bikes you reach Alberese, the main entrance to the Parco Naturale della Maremma, and cross the Ombrone river..
Immediately you’re deep in the Mediterranean scrubland of the Monti dell’Uccellina: holm oaks, cork trees, and strawberry trees, with the smell of resin in the air.
Riding the park trails you come across free-roaming Maremma cattle and horses, fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar, and foxes. And with a little luck, you spot the Butteri — the last mounted herdsmen of the Maremma tradition, Italy’s own cowboys — driving their herds to pasture.
Then you reach the beach at Collelungo, accessible only on foot or by bike, with the Torre di Collelungo rising above the sea. If you want to swim, this is the place. You continue to the mouth of the Ombrone, riding through the Pineta Granducale — the pine forest planted by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany — with the fragrant scent of resin and salt in the air, before heading back to the start.
Waiting at the end: dinner in the garden at Gli Attortellati, in the cool of a Maremma evening. The tortelli maremmani by Chef Mamo, made fresh to order, are the absolute heart of the menu. Don’t leave without trying them. And yes, freshly made, makes all the difference.
